Year 10 Citizenship

As part of their project on Sustainable Development, Year 10 students conducted some research on Bottled Water. They did a taste test, inviting students to see if they could tell the difference between bottled water and tap water.

Turns out most people thought the tap water tasted better.

Nice to see staff getting involved as well.

Good job Year 10!

All classes will be doing a lot of Citizenship this term. The focus is on Sustainable Development (helping to protect the planet) and all students will be getting actively involved in projects that will help to make Maplewell a more environmentally friendly community.

Last half term, students throughout the school explored their Rights and Responsibilities in the context of Human Rights. It was the 50th anniversary of the UN Declaration on Human Rights, so this was a really topical set of lessons.

Year 7 students explored their new school rules while year 8 created a perfect island with all the things a community would need to make sure that they had full access to their Human Rights.

Year 9 explored how poverty affects people's ability to access their human rights and were very touched by a video from Teachers' TV about child poverty in the US.

Year 10 students explored the kind of consequences we would face if we didn't have rules to protect us and year 11 looked at how our own behaviour sometimes affects the Human Rights of the people around us.

This half term brings us a new area for inquiry: Identity and Diversity

Thank you to year 11 who have taken up the first Giving Nation challenge. I look forward to seeing what you come up with. Hopefully, you will set the tone with an amazing effort and enable Maplewell Hall School to do even better than last year.

Homework Competition

It's Citizenship homework this week. Everyone has a task that asks them to watch, listen to or read a news story over the weekend.

To encourage more of you to do the homework and hand it in I am offering a £5 gift voucher for one lucky person.

All you have to do is click on the comments link at the bottom of this post and leave the message - "I have done my homework". Don't forget to put your name on the message.

Anyone who hands in their homework and has left a comment, will be entered in the draw for the voucher next Friday.

Giving Nation

Felicity Tyson of The Citizenship Foundation rang to interview Mr Cooper about the school's involvemnt in the Giving Nation scheme. She rang because she was impressed with our work and wanted to hear about what we had been doing and what we were learning from the experience.

Year 8 FUNdraising

This term Year 8 have been collecting money and gifts for an orphanage in Nepal. They have organised a school disco and an egg hunt. They have also been collecting much needed things to put in shoe boxes to send to the orphanage.

Fair Trade

Year 9 are studying how Fair Trade Footballs are transforming lives in Pakistan. They are going to write to all Premier League football teams to raise awareness of the issues discussed in this video from Teachers TV that we watched in class.
